Choke Canyon Reservoir

Choke Canyon Reservoir was impounded in 1982 to serve as a water supply for the city of Corpus Christi. It is located approximately 77 miles south of San Antonio and conveniently located near the towns of Three Rivers and George West. Choke Canyon Reservoir reached 100% capacity in 2002 for a total of 25,989 acres and is fed by the Frio River Watershed. Texas Parks and Wildlife maintains the Choke Canyon State park which consists of two units, the South Shore Unit and the Calliham Unit, both of which have improved boat ramps. One of the unique features of Choke Canyon Reservoir is the lack of shoreline development.  Because Choke Canyon is surrounded by public land, it gives the reservoir a rustic look and enables fishermen to experience Southwest Texas wildlife up close and personal.

Choke Canyon Reservoir started out as a great Bass fishing lake, but in the past few years, since 2002, the lake has really come into it’s own as a Bass fishing haven.  The current lake record stands at 15.45 pounds but, it is the number of double digit Bass that really make Choke Canyon Reservoir stand out.  It routinely takes a five fish limit of over 25 pounds to cash a check in a Bass fishing tournament on Choke Canyon and recent Bass Champs tournament results have been truly amazing. In eight Bass Champs tournaments from 2006 to 2008, the lowest winning five fish limit has been 28.40 pounds with 29 five fish limits over 30 pounds and one incredible five fish limit of 44.98 pounds brought to the scales in April of 2007.  2009 has been a banner year with numerious fish over 13 pounds being caught.

While spring and fall are the best months for Bass fishing at Choke Canyon, good sized Bass can be caught year round if you’re able to bear the heat and be patient and persistent. Choke Canyon is full of standing timber, main lake points, river and creek channels, ledges, humps, roadbeds, rocky shorelines and pond dams that all hold Bass and the Hydrilla, a fixture since the late 1980s, is always a great place to find Bass.
